Google to Introduce Icons to Assist On-the-Go Mobile Browsing

With mobile web browsing increasingly on the rise, Google are in the process of introducing a set of icons to depict whether a website is optimised for mobile devices or not. In a move to increase the usability of mobile searches on-the-go, Google’s aim is to direct browsers to the information they seek while ensuring a fully optimised experience, with the icons increasing the chance of mobile optimised content being clicked.

It’s unlikely you’ll have seen this feature yet as Google are still in the testing process. Testing has shown mobile friendly sites with a mobile phone icon, while a site not optimised for mobile viewing has shown a phone icon with a slash through it. It seems the testing process is looking to identify which icon has a more positive response – sites shown as friendly for mobile use or those highlighted as non-optimal for mobile viewing.

At Web Design High Wycombe, we see this as a positive move from Google and welcome the introduction, as it will not only benefit browsers, avoiding the need to access non-optimised mobile sites on-the-go but we anticipate it will also increase traffic to the sites of companies that are moving with the times to ensure their sites are mobile friendly.
