Basic Web Jargon Explained

At Web Design High Wycombe, we attempt to avoid talking in web jargon when speaking to our clients and offering advice about their web projects. That is not to say that it isn’t useful, for anyone looking to have a website built, to understand some of the key phrases that world wide web design has introduced.

Below is a glossary of terms that it can be helpful to understand before you enlist an agency to work on your web project.

  1. Domain name or URL (Uniform Resource Locator) – the web address for your site e.g. www.webdesignhighwycombe.com.
  2. Homepage – the first page of your website that is accessed when a visitor types in your Domain name/URL.
  3. HTML (Hypertext Mark-up Language) – the standard language from which websites are created.
  4. CMS (Content Management System) – provides users with the ability to create and update pages of their website once it has been built.
  5. FTP (File Transfer Protocol) – enables the transfer of large files via the internet for upload to a website

  7. Front end – the part of a website you access and view.
  8. Back end – the code that is used to create what is seen at the front end.
  9. Navigation – relates to the structure of your site and how visitors negotiate their way from page to page perhaps through the use of a navigation menu at the top of the page or navigation panel to the side of the page.
  10. SEO (Search Engine Optimisation) – the process of optimising a website through the use of keywords and phrases, unique content and images to improve search engine rankings.
  11. Keywords & Phrases – terms that your target audience might use to search for your services in Google. For example, web design High Wycombe.
  12. Ranking – the position your site appears in search engines for your keywords and phrases.
  13. Back links – a link from another website back to your own site. These links help increase your SEO rating if the sites containing the link to your site are considered quality websites.
  14. Responsive Design – this form of design enables your website to adapt to the width of the screen or device from which visitors are viewing, ensuring your full site can be viewed the same way from a desktop computer or mobile device.
  15. Cookies – data that a website saves containing information about you, with the aim to use said information to improve your user experience next time you visit the site.
